Dr. Jody Gerdts bees on hat

Hello

Nice to see you!  Broken River Apiaries has been germinating for the past 20 years.  It has finally found a place to grow roots, broken the surface and is reaching for the skies. My goal for Broken River Apiaries is all about connection.

Connecting my community to their food, to their bushlands, and to one another.  In this ever isolating world, we can learn from the bees about the  joy and importance of working together.

My Story

I am the founder and Director of Bee Scientifics and Broken River Apiaries and based in Benalla Victoria.  As a fourth generation beekeeper and scientist, I work to integrate innovative scientific advances into commercial beekeeping practices.   My PhD work focused on the relationship between hygienic behaviour and chalkbrood infection in Australian honey bees and I continue to work on understanding how to breed bees for exceptional commercial traits and resistance to pathogens and pests.  My interest in breeding bees for Varroa resistance has been supported through two prestigious fellowships: International Specialised Skills Institute and Veski Fellowship providing opportunity for international travel and collaboration with some of the world’s leading experts.  When not up to my elbows in bees, I love to load up the caravan, daughter, two dogs, and bikes go on adventures in the Australian bush.
